Tea Leaves and Legends Of Gypsy’s Tea Room
Certain things in life are so superb that one is compelled to bring them together. Thus, the historic William Winchester House in Westminster, Maryland became Gypsy’s Tea Room in September, 2002.
Some history first . . . inspired by her family and friends in the last year of her 30-year nursing career, Gypsy “Jo” Fleck, began a gift basket business, “Inspirations”, in her basement. Gypsy soon expanded “Inspirations” to the bottom floor of 13 Liberty Street in Westminster, MD. As the business grew, Gypsy moved to the second floor and began to serve tea to her customers. She eventually tried a Mother’s Day Tea where she could seat 12 in a small corner of the shop. Gypsy’s daughter, Lora, prepared the food and there were two employees in the shop. Approximately 15 tea blends and a limited menu of scones, sandwiches, and sweets were available.
As are most opportunities in life, timing was everything. In 2002, the historic aforementioned William Winchester House was currently a Bed and Breakfast under Target Community Services. Target, under the supervision of Tom Zirpoli, was seeking a business to replace the Bed and Breakfast. You might say that 111 Stoner Avenue suited Inspirations and Gypsy’s Tea Room “to a tea” as there were no tea rooms in Carroll County at the time.
Upon establishment at the Stoner Avenue location, the tea line greatly expanded to 100 teas. In the 20 years that Gypsy’s Tea Room has been established, customers from across the United States and abroad have had tea at Gypsy’s.
In a recent, brief interview with Gypsy Fleck, she stated that her most rewarding aspects of the business have included customer satisfaction, developing new tea blends, and educating folks about the tea world. Gypsy also stated that her most challenging aspect of the business, and of being a business owner for 20 years has been sustaining the business in the early years and keeping the business fresh throughout the succeeding years with trends and hosting unique events.
Gypsy has employed many people throughout the years and attributed her happy, returning customers to the loyalty and dedication of her staff.
Gypsy retired from the tea room in August of 2018. Becky & Jessica Alder, a mother-daughter team, have taken over the care & service of the tea room.
